About Guatemalan quetzals
The Guatemalan Quetzal takes its name from the national bird, whose feathers were used as currency during the ancient times of the Mayan Empire. The value of each banknote is denoted in Mayan numerals as a mark of respect for its history. The paper currency was introduced proper during the 1920s, replacing the peso – the one quetzal note still features the face of the president who was in charge at the time, José María Orellana.
