About Ghanaian Cedi
Prior to Ghana’s independence in 1957, it used West African pounds, shillings and pence. Its first sovereign currency was Ghana pounds, shilling and pence – until 1965, when it introduced cedi notes and pesewa coins. In 1967, this was replaced by new cedi notes, which remain in circulation today in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50.

* Western Union also makes money from currency exchange. When choosing a money transmitter, carefully compare both transfer fees and exchange rates. Fees, foreign exchange rates and taxes may vary by brand, channel, and location based on a number of factors. Fees and rates subject to change without notice.
