The Australian dollar replaced the Australian pound in 1966. For a brief period in the 1960s, the Reserve Bank of Australia was ready to call their new currency the Royal, but a huge public backlash stopped that from happening. The dollar is divided into 100 cents. New Australian dollar banknotes are being made with special tactile features that will allow vision-impaired people to identify them by touch.
