Here’s what you need to do to get started with buying a money order – an alternative to sending cash or checks.
Find your nearest location. Use our store locator page to find the nearest Money Services in your town.
Fill out a money order form. Bring cash to cover the money order and the fee, and fill out the money order in detail.
Deliver your money order. This can be done in person or by sending it through the mail.
All you need to bring to get a money order is the cash for the amount requested and the fee. A government-issued ID may be required.
Fees and limits will vary by state, but you’ll always save on the fees with your shoppers card! Ask your Money Services store team for more details, including exact amounts in your area.
You can buy a money order from Money Services, located in the Kroger Family of Stores. We have extended opening hours at evenings and weekends, so you can still buy or pick up a money order even when the banks are closed.
If you’ve received a money order, drop by the Money Services desk with the order and some government-issued ID to cash it. Endorse it by signing the back. Then, you can take it in cash or load the money on to a prepaid card. There will be some fees associated.*

What is a money order?
A money order is a form of payment that credits the payee with a specific amount. It’s a lot like a check except that the order has been paid for in advance, and is not taken from a bank account after being cashed. It can be a more reliable way of sending money to someone than giving them cash.
What can a money order be used for?
A money order has many different uses which you might find more helpful than a check or cash. Use a money order to:
- Send money through the mail safely
- Make payments on private purchases
- Pay bills – including utilities or rent – without a bank account
Use your Shopper’s Card to take advantage of our everyday discounts.
Keep hold of your receipt as proof of payment.
Always check if there is an expiration date on the money order.
If you’ve lost your money order or think it may have been stolen, you will need to contact Western Union® for help. You can call them at 1-800-999-9660 and they will walk you through the process, or visit their website for more information.
