Who is Western Union?
When a group of New York businessmen helped bring together the nation’s competing east-west telegraph systems in 1856, the Western Union® name was established. Even as far back as 1871, when its Money Transfer service was launched, customers could send money across the country using the ground-breaking telegram system.
Throughout the 20th century, the company continued to make technology that mattered. It played a key role in the AUTODIN system, which was used to send computerized information between United States military bases around the world.
Western Union looked after and helped the system grow. With its reliability and capacity to send information accurately within, AUTODIN was widely recognized as the forerunner to the internet as we know it today.
Although the telegram system was shut down in 2006, today Western Union® continues its mission to connect people around the world with more than 500,000 agent locations in over 200 countries and territories.
